Dr. Azam Basheer obtained his bachelor's degree in science with a minor in chemistry after attending Fairleigh Dickinson University on an academic and athletic scholarship. There, he graduated with the highest distinction of Summa Cum Laude. After college, he started working at Hoffman-La Roche modifying molecular copying with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. His work with genetics stoked his interest in the field of medicine, and neurosurgery in particular. After applying to medical schools, he was awarded with a Presidential Scholarship to attend the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he obtained his Medical Degree in 2010 with Alpha Omega Alpha top honors.
Dr. Basheer completed his neurosurgical residency in 2017 at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan. During residency, he developed a strong interest to understand spine motion and biomechanics. While honing his skills during residency, his hard work and the time he spent at the Bio-motion Lab translated into numerous publications and scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. His research covers adult spine deformity, minimally invasive spine surgery, scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, hydrocephalus, brain tumors, awake brain surgery, vascular malformations and peripheral nerve disorders. He also gave several podium presentations and lectures at various national meetings and local venues. Additionally, he continues to be an active editor for the British Medical Journal, an active member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), and the North American Spine Society (NASS).
Dr. Basheer remains committed to academic neurosurgery by maintaining robust ties to academic institutions and by being proactive in surgical residents’ education and teaching. In addition to his special interest in spine disorders, he has a passion for treating patients with neuro-oncological illnesses, peripheral nerve conditions and neuro-traumatic injuries. Taking into account spine alignment and biomechanics, Dr. Basheer believes that Minimally Invasive Spine (MIS) techniques, when applied correctly and thoughtfully, can result in the best long-term outcomes. His strong work ethic, commitment to his patients, and academic curiosity have been his driving force and motivation to serve his community. He was one of the first to surgeons in Michigan to adopt and incorporate cutting edge robotic spinal surgery to improve patient outcomes. He was also the first to introduce awake cranial surgery in Jackson and Hillsdale counties.
Dr. Basheer is dedicated to advancing the world of neurosurgery by closely collaborating with his peers, actively participating in academic and teaching opportunities, and continuing research that would lead to newer technology and product development to ultimately improve patients’ outcome. He has dedicated his education and career to helping patients find solutions to their spinal and neurological conditions. The measurable differences he has made for his patients shines through in their shared testimonials, and is evident in their improved quality of life
